Welcome to Cinemassacre Rental Reviews’ Febru-Carrey. Four Jim Carrey movies all February long. This week the gang does Man on the Moon. The movie traces Andy Kaufman’s (Jim Carrey) steps from childhood through the comedy clubs and television appearances that made him famous, including his memorable appearances on Saturday Night Live, Late Night with David Letterman, Fridays, and his role as Latka Gravas on the sitcom Taxi, which was popular among viewers but disruptive for Kaufman’s co-stars. The film pays particular attention to the various inside jokes, scams, put-ons, and happenings for which Kaufman was famous, most significantly his long-running feud with wrestler Jerry “The King” Lawler and his portrayal of the bawdy lounge singer Tony Clifton.

They also talk about the documentary Jim and Andy: The Great Beyond which follows actor Jim Carrey as he remains in character as Andy Kaufman during the production of Man on the Moon.

  2. I was drawn in to Cinemassacre by AVGN.
As I got to see more and more of James other material I've been drawn further in.
Keep up the awesome work and whatever character you choose to be. I'll keep watching.

  3. I'm kinda late on this, but this video opened up a huge rabbit hole for me, and for anyone who hasn't seen Jim Carrey's motivational speeches I highly recommend them. I believe Hollywood had broken, yet humbled him. Smart dude.

  4. I disagree. Jim played Jim, not Andy. He is an ass, and an awful method actor. He ruined the movie. The sets are NOT similar to the real old videos of Andy. Not even CLOSE. Shame, Jim ruined Andy. Rip andy

  5. Eh, Olyphant was right. It was pretentious. Carey talking to Kaufman's family as he was Andy? That's just lunacy and a straight up God complex as well as making the set's crew a living hell for being Andy. Which is not just being the character but being totally obnoxious off-camera.

  6. Justin – Saying you prefer the tribute movies over the material they cover is bizarre. It's like saying you'd enjoy eating a piece of paper with the Coke ingredients written on it versus having an actual coke.

  7. Kieran, dude, I think you're wrong. Timothy Oliphant was obviously joking. He said that he was in character, watching this documentary and it was too bad, that his character didn't like it, because he (Timothy) would have liked it. He was joking and you should see more of Timothy on the Conan's show, because he's great at that. His best role is when he's Conan's host XD.

  8. If you want history of Andy Kaufman vs. Jerry "The King" Lawler, read Jim Cornette's "Behind the Curtain" graphic novel, based on the incidents that occurred before, during, and after the Lawler/Kaufman match (in a nutshell). As much as it seems that Andy Kaufman was taking advantage/making fun of the wrestling business, he was paying homage to kayfabe of the wrestling business. Believe it or not, he had a lot of respect for it due to the fact that he understood the mechanics of building a gimmick and planning a storyline in wrestling at the time. On another note, having Colin Jost and Michael Che in the battle royal at Wrestlemania 35 was an insult to the wrestling business. Whenever WWE tries to do something like that, us fans know what's up and we express our approval/disapproval to the company.

  9. When it comes to Jerry and Andy I think very few people knew about their friendship and how their whole fued was a work and good story telling. The Andy that Jim was channeling was just the image everyone one seen on TV and from friends and family. I think Jerry Lawler even tells Jim (Andy) they that him and Andy were friends, and Jim (Andy) doesn't accept that. Man on the Moon is in my top 5 of Jim Carrey movies.

  10. Wasn't this film bad? That's what I understood anyway. And wasn't it super inaccurate too? Do you really get to know anything about someone if a biopic is inaccurate?
I'd love to see a debate between you and Doug Walker

  11. The song man on the moon is about Andy Kauffman.

He was a big inspiration for one of the lead members of the band R.E.M

  12. I'm so glad you bring up the documentary I didn't know you were so obviously my comments were posted before I have a really bad memory problem so I always post comments while I remember them because YouTube will not let me exit the comment and continue the vid so I just keep making new comments new, so it kind so I just keep making new comments new, so it kind of floods your comment section which again I'm sorry about that but I try to make something funny but I don't know hit and miss I guess just like everything else

  13. That cartoon was kinda funny now I gotta check that out one rabbit whole goes to another .that's awesome as long as you think it's funny and having fun that's all that matters

  14. Timothy Olyphant is an accomplished actor in his own right. And he obviously didn't get that he was making a joke.

  15. Andy Kaufman is long overdue to be in the celebrity wing of the WWE Hall Of Fame. Cyndi Lauper is another one that needs to be inducted.

  16. The Truman show was my least favourite along with The Mask, I don't know. Just never was a fan of those ones. Also, Cable Guy. Just me…
